| | | Acme Speed Shop is located in Greenville, South Carolina and is owned and operated by myself, Hap Waldrop. I have raced British cars in the SCCA for over 20 years competing at the top level of amatuer road racing. I have been in the automotive repair business for over 25+ years. In 2001 I created Acme Speed Shop so I could focus on my true passion, British performance street/race engine building, race cars, engine component work, SU carb rebuilding and a few custom performance parts.
Acme's specailty is rebuilding MG engines, we do anything from a full out race engine to a stock rebuild. AcmeI also do cylinder head work, from a complete porting and polish job, flowbench testing to a valve job or refurbishing a stock cylinder head. AcmeI also do engine component work such as lightening and balance work on crankshafts, connecting rods, etc.. I build SU carbs for race and street use. I can do the complete job for you or just prepare certain components for you if you desire to do the assembly work yourself.
So mostly what we do here at Acme is bench rebuilding, I am a distributor for VTO wheels. I sell engine rebuilding kits for MG engines for you folks that want to do the work yourself, and want to make sure you get the highest quaility parts that actually used by the seller. We do occasion take in a British cars in the shop for repair Feel free to check with us on a hard to find parts or a custom parts, for example our custom pistons for race and superchargered street applications, and many hard to find performance items not normally carried by traditional British car part vendors .
Meet the staff at Acme
Hap Waldrop, I'm the onwer and operator of Acme Speed Shop, I've worked in the aumtomotive industry all my life, first at my dad's car business, then later as a the owner/operator of Poinsett Tire and Auto, (a Goodyear dealership), then Acme Speed Shop. I raced in the SCCA in MGs since 1984, won some races, a few championships. I really enjoy this work, taking some old , greasy, grimey, fairly useless used MG compnent, and renewing it to new life, I still get agreat felling of accomplish form doing that, and strive to do it well. This not just a job for me, it's a passion. I'm currently starting to race again, this time in vintage racing with a 1967 MGB vintage race car.
Byron Hall, Byron has been helping me part time for several years now, but recently made Acme Speed Shop his full time gig. Byron works in the shop rebuilding and prepping for rebuilding, engine SU carbs, engine components. Byron impressed me right from the beginning, he was already knowldegable on automotive, his desire to learn, his strong will to do the job right, and to take great pride in everything he does. Byron owned a 1980 MGB LE, which has been doing a driving restoration on, redoing the interior, the bodywork, and getting the drive train relaible. Byron ans well has spet most of his adult life in the automotive business, as mechanic and body and paint man. I proud to have Byron aboard at Acme.
Fred Thomas, Fred helps me part ime on alot of projects, from engine building to fabrication and design, he was big part of the Huffaker MGB race car restoration, as well as other key jobs here at Acme. Fred's background is automotive as well, he's been a import mechanic his entire working life. At his day job, Fred keeps Mecrcedes Benzs, BMWs, Volvos, Rolls Royces, Ferraris, Lotus and may other fine imports purring like kittens. Fred has raced a SCCA GP Austin Healey Sprite since the late 70s, and done very well with it, winning amy race and championship with his Sprite race car. Fred also owns a 63 MG Midget street car, Bonnie as he call her. Fred can credit himself as being the person who got me so interested in engine rebuilding years ago, as he is one of my mentors. Fred and I are great frineds and have been for decades, and still ;ove these little British cars and fiquirig out what makes them tick, and making them tick just a bit better. Fred is currently designing his own line of racing gearboxes for the Spridgets, and Acme Speed Shop will help i then marketing and sales of these gearboxes.
